Decorating for a Better Night’s Sleep

While we all strive to create a bedroom fit for the cover of your latest interior design magazine, the most important aspect of your room should be what it is there for: sleep. Design yourself an ultimate sleep sanctuary with the tips below and get catching some well deserved z’s.

Curtains are Key

Unless you like to rise with the sun, you’re going to want to get yourself some black out curtains. While blinds can be a visually pleasing option,, choosing curtains with a heavy black-out lining is far more practical for sleep purposes. Heavy curtains not only help keep the light out, but they can also assist in insulating your room- depending on the time of year and the position of your room, drawing your curtains early can help you retain warmth when those winter chills set in.

Lighten Up

Reading lamps or bedside pendant lights are essential for creating your sleep sanctuary. Opt for bulbs with a soft tungsten glow as opposed to florescent bulbs as this will give your eyes a rest before bedtime. It’s also a good idea to stay off that phone right before you sleep; studies show that bright LED screens such as phones and TV’s can disrupt sleep cycles, so instead why not read a book before bed instead of scrolling through your Facebook feed.

Less is More

While those winter nights can get cold, it’s always best to opt for lighter bedding at night. Try keep your room at approximately 16/18 degrees at night and select naturally breathable cotton bedding to help regulate body temperature. If possible it’s also a good idea to crack a window slightly to aid airflow and avoid condensation build up which can lead to dampness and potential respiratory issues.
